My career in the Financial Services Industry began by circumstance in 1993 when I was laid off from my position as legal secretary with a local Law Firm. I was a newlywed and my career was just beginning, so when I was offered the position of Assistant to the Sales Manager with Sun Life Financial, I eagerly accepted.
Almost immediately I became immersed in learning about this new industry, I began with client service and management courses specifically designed for the life and health insurance industry. Between the years of 1994-1997, I achieved the Life Office Management Association (LOMA) designations of Associate Customer Service (ACS) and Associate Insurance Agency Administration (AIAA), and it was during these busy years that my two wonderful sons were born, Skyler in 1994 and Liam in 1995.
I was excited about what I was learning in the financial services industry, more importantly though, I was really enjoying the interaction with our clients. While under the mentorship of the Senior Financial Advisor, my career path became more advisor focused when I became Life Insurance licensed and then Mutual Funds Licensed through the Investment Funds Institute of Canada (IFIC) in 1998. In 2004 my role within the firm had evolved to Associate Advisor and included Branch Manager functions. It was at that time that I began the Certified Financial Planner course and over the next 3 years I would be writing exams every 6 months. In 2007 I was pleased and relieved to achieve the profession designation of Certified Financial Planner (CFP®).
I cannot say enough about the benefits of having a Mentor to guide me in those early years, however, as time went on it seemed natural for me to venture out to set up a clientele of my own. After exploring my options, in 2010, I decided to move on and I joined Dundee Wealth Management as an Independent Advisor. My client base began to grow with young families looking for guidance with education savings for children, strategies to protect the family from losses due to death, disability and serious illness, retirement and investment planning, cash flow management strategies and tax planning ideas. Pre-retirees have become a larger part of my client base as we are experiencing the “sandwich generation” where adult children and elderly parents are impacting the ability for couples to navigate a comfortable retirement goal, while balancing family demands. Many of my senior clients are the parents of my pre-retiree clients and grandparents of my young family clients. I am proud to say, that in some cases, I am working with 3 generations of the same family, I am honoured to be the trusted advisor to these family branches.
In 2013 I was thrilled for the opportunity to join Sound Financial Strategies and to join a firm that has proven to be one of the top financial planning firms in Northern Ontario, offering a full suite of services and a professional referral network. When I am not pursuing educational opportunities to grow my practice, you will find me supporting a variety of local charities such as Soup Sisters, a monthly group that meets to cook fresh, homemade soup to supply the local women’s shelter with a hot lunch every day of the month! I am big supporter of the local and community theatre, supporting groups such as YES Theatre, Sudbury Performance Group and my son, Choreographer and professional dancer, Sky Slywchuk. I enjoy yoga classes and a weekly group meditation to nurture my spirit. I am eager to grow my practice and welcome new clients and referrals.
